Notice Signs Like These? It's Time to Schedule an Eye Exam

You may be able to detect a change in vision all on your own. From headaches, to light sensitivity, to tired eyes, your body may already be telling you that you need an optometry appointment. Visit our doctors to feel better and see clearly once again.

When Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Not everyone needs to visit the optometrist yearly. Usually, if you have healthy vision, you can attend your eye exam every other year. However, your eye doctor may recommend annual appointments if you:

Have Current Prescriptions

Staying up-to-date on your vision prescription can prevent headaches, blurry vision, and more. Our in-house optical lab makes it easy to change out the lenses of your favorite frames after an appointment.

Have Changing Vision

Many people with glasses or contact prescriptions have stable prescriptions. If your vision has not changed in the past few years, your optometrist may recommend a longer time in between appointments.

Are Age 40+

As we get older, our vision may change. We also may be susceptible to certain ocular conditions, like age-related macular degeneration. Protect your eye health with more frequent visits after you turn 40.

Have Family History of Eye Conditions

Patients may have a family history of serious eye conditions, like glaucoma. Or, they may have a family history of diseases that can cause eye problems, such as how diabetes may result in diabetic retinopathy.

If We See Symptoms of Serious Eye Conditions Your Optometrist Will Ensure You're in Good Hands

It is possible that your eye doctor may identify a potential problem during your vision exam. Our optometrists can diagnose and treat eye conditions like dry eye, cataracts, and glaucoma.

If your optometrist detects an eye disease we cannot treat at our offices, we will still help you find care. Your eye doctor will refer you to a trusted NVISION partner for immediate treatment.

Exploring the Steps of a Typical Eye Exam: An Optometry Treatment Timeline

Together, our San Diego-area optometrists have over four decades of experience.

Appointment Check-in

Once you arrive at our Del Mar or La Jolla office, you can check in for your appointment. If you are new to our practice, bring your insurance information so we can enter it into our records.

Medical History

Our eye doctors work hard to give you excellent care. They will ensure that they have the information needed to best treat you by reviewing your medical history before the exam starts.

Health Tests

One of the most important parts of your appointment is the eye disease screening. Your doctor will also examine how your eyes function, checking on your peripheral vision and depth perception.

Eye Exam

Ever heard of the Snellen Chart? It's that eye chart filled with different-sized letters that you read from during your appointment. It helps us determine your visual acuity, or how well you see over distances.

Lens Fitting

The right contact lens blends comfort with functionality. We always hold contact fittings to ensure that you like the feel of your contact lenses, and that they are working correctly.

Prescription Eyewear

After their eye care visit, patients can choose custom eyeglasses or sunglasses from our in-house optical lab. As for their new contacts, they can order quality contact lenses in brands like Bausch + Lomb and Vistakon®.

Patients No Longer Need to Have Their Pupils Dilated Thanks to Our Fundus Camera

Pupil dilation can be uncomfortable. The effects can mean you'll likely have trouble driving or being in front of a screen — both of which can put a damper on your day.

We offer another way to find retinal irregularities: our fundus camera. It's quick and easy, allowing our eye doctors to take a picture of your pupils. Then, you're free to go about your day worry-free.

After Your Exam Easily Pick Out Stylish Eyewear From Our Office

Patients can benefit from our in-house optical laboratory, where our experienced team can quickly and skillfully put together your new glasses or sunglasses. In fact, we can even prepare your custom eyewear on the same day as your vision appointment.

If your glasses ever end up needing adjustments or repairs, you'll have peace of mind knowing that our patients can use these services for free. After all, our goal is to help you have happy, healthy vision.

Prefer contacts? We feature many premium brands of contact lenses, like Alcon, CooperVision®, and ACUVUE.
